Women's Aid

Women’s Aid is the national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children.

We have been at the forefront of shaping and coordinating responses to domestic violence and abuse through practice for over 45 years. We empower survivors by keeping their voices at the heart of our work, working with and for women and children by listening to them and responding to their needs.

Women’s Aid was founded on women’s struggle against patriarchy, sexism and male violence and grew out of the Women’s movement in the 70’s and 80’s. Today we take an intersectional approach to our work to end domestic abuse and stand with other feminist organisations leading the way in eradicating Violence Against Women and Girls.

4am rug by Henry Holland x Floor Story

120cm x 124cm Wool I

Inspired by 80’s and 90’s Rave Culture

For the London Design festival 2021, East London rug company FLOOR_STORY has collaborated with Henry Holland, on a series of rugs integrating bold patterns and classic rave iconography, including smiley faces and psychedelic-style patterns. The striking pieces more than allude to ‘out of mind’ experiences with irregular shaping and runners which seems to melt into the surroundings. More muted tones allow for integration into various interior settings; the more striking designs make for wonderfully unexpected statement rugs.

‘Goose’ by Peter Jones

10 x 10” oil on canvas, framed.

Approx £1000

A Goose is not just for Christmas

Lambs, bunnies and fish are the subjects of many works by Peter Jones but his real fascination lies with monkeys; not real monkeys but vintage stuffed toys on the verge of falling apart. Each one is nearing the end of its lifespan and possesses an inherent vulnerability that is doubled because, as a still-life subject, it is ready for inspection. Worn out from either love or neglect.

Polly Borland is famous for her experimental, stylized, and occasionally unsettling portrait photographs. Borland’s subjects have ranged from Cate Blanchett to Queen Elizabeth II to musician Nick Cave, whom she has been documenting for 35 years. Borland, who draws inspiration from Diane Arbus, carefully directs the costumes, makeup, and poses of her models, creating scenes that are intimate and dysmorphic. Of the photographer Cave has said, “Polly seems to me to be shooting into a distorted mirror and simply bringing back heartbreaking refracted images of herself.”

‘When I end you begin’ by Hedley Roberts

20 x 20 cm

Oil on canvas

Hedley Roberts makes ‘non-portraits’ of lovers, friends, family, acquaintances and strangers. The paintings start figuratively with recognisable features and representational composition, but as they progress, elements are obliterated, layered over, removed or simplified. Works are returned to over weeks, months and years as the paint dries and layers are built up. The finished works stop being a representational portrait of the sitter and instead begin to function as â€œother” portraits of the internal dialogue, thoughts, time and socio-political landscape in which they were made.

Alumni of Plymouth School of Art, Falmouth School of Art, Central Saint Martins, The School of Visual Arts NYC, the Royal College of Art and has a Doctorate in Fine Art from the University of East London. Royal College of Art Fine Art Fellow and a Stanley Picker Fellow at Kingston University.

Red Tights by Polly Penrose

Size 50 x 75 cm

Framed

Approx £1500

Polly Penrose has been taking self-portraits on a ten-second timer and more recently a remote for nearly 20 years. Her work is unpremeditated and spontaneous and records her responding to her environment. She explores identity and the opposed notions of vulnerability and empowerment, comedy and tragedy. Her pictures focus less on sexuality and female allure, but retain the awkward, often beguiling force of the body as an object, pushed into a space, forced into a position whilst feigning a sense of normality and control.

Her first solo show, A Body of Work, Downstairs at Mother Gallery, London, was in May 2014, and her second solo show 10 Seconds at the Hoxton Gallery, London, in May 2016. The same year, she exhibited in the group shows Self Reflection at the Untitled Space, New York, and All Inclusive at the HVW8 Gallery, Berlin. In 2018, she showed work in Spring Break Art Show in New York, and at Messum’s Wiltshire as part of the group show Image. Her third solo show, Self Obscured, was at the Benrubi Gallery, New York in 2019, and the same year in Gossamer, curated by Zoe Bedeaux at the Carl Freedman Gallery, Margate. In September 2020, she exhibited in Emerging Contemporaries at the Michael Hoppen Gallery and A Picture of Health, Woman Photographers from the Hyman Collection, at the Arnolfini Gallery Bristol.

Her work has been featured widely in publications including The Guardian, Dazed Digital, The British Journal of Photography, The Huffington Post, and Artnet.
