What is Global Porphyria Day?

Global Porphyria Day (GPD) is a day where the international porphyria community comes together to raise awareness of porphyria and rare disease in our local communities.

It takes place each year on 18 May and is coordinated by the Global Porphyria Advocacy Coalition (GPAC), an umbrella organization for national porphyria patient advocacy organisations across the world.

Find out more about how to get involved in the GPD festivities at www.porphyria.org.uk/gpd-2025.

To find out how our work supports families living affected by porphyria, watch this video where EPP patient Tiernan and his mother Niamh explain how the BPA helps them to build community and reduce feelings of isolation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU_0b5fm48s.

Supporting

British Porphyria Association

The British Porphyria Association is committed to advocating for, supporting and educating porphyria patients, relatives and medical professionals, so as to improve the quality of life for those living with the different types of porphyria. We promote disease awareness and the advancement of research into new therapies.

Awareness is vital if we are to ensure quicker diagnosis and a better patient journey.

The porphyrias are a group of rare, mainly genetic, conditions that have life-limiting and sometimes life-threatening impacts on a patient’s life. Patients often experience exceptionally negative effects on their physical health, family and social relationships, financial stability and psychological and emotional wellbeing. By providing families with the tools and resources to be informed about their condition, we can help to improve the lives of those affected.
