Hi all! I'm Tom and I will be running the York 10k on 4th August 2024.
I have decided to raise money for the York Energy Advice fuel poverty service run by York Community Energy. York Energy Advice has been helping vulnerable York residents with their energy needs since the energy crisis struck in 2021. Anyone who is on a low income, aged 65+ or has a long-term health condition is eligible for the service. Examples of the kind of support provided are:
- Home visits to help people understand how to save energy and keep warm in winter
- Free energy-saving measures such as LED bulbs, radiator foil, draught-proofing
- Help applying for grant-funded insulation schemes
- Help accessing financial support such as fuel vouchers and other local schemes
In the last year alone, York Energy Advice has supported 216 York households and helped people save a combined total of around 13,000 kWh of energy! YEA has helped young families in cold and mouldy homes, disabled people with specific energy needs and pensioners who have struggled to keep up with the increasing cost of living, amongst others. The friendly team of Energy Advisors have been described as "supportive", "understanding" and "empathetic".
I should mention that I work for and am a volunteer Director of York Community Energy, and that YCE also has other initiatives such as providing home retrofit assessments and creating a York-wide solar farm on the rooftops of schools and businesses. However, all the money raised here will go speficially to the York Energy Advice service to help people in need.
