Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit the Thermo Fisher Flyers fundraising page.

The Thermo Fisher Flyers are a core group of Thermo Fisher Scientific employees. We run for fun and to keep fit and healthy - hence helping to make the world a healthier, cleaner and safer place!  Most importantly we complete challenges to raise money to help fight devastating illnesses.

This year, we have chosen to raise money for Together Dementia Support.  They are a small, local group who run social activities for people with dementia to join which for some, including my mum, is their only opportunity to take part in social activities.  Unlike many of the other groups and meetings, Together Dementia Support have a minibus which volunteers drive to collect members from their homes and drop them back off afterwards.  It wouldn’t be possible for my mum to get to any other social groups without anyone to collect her and drop her off.  In addition to that, the charity do a great deal to support the carers of those with dementia.  They run a weekly support group where carers can meet and talk with others, take part in social activities, as well as classes on various practical considerations to help carers to manage.  They really are a lifeline for me and my mum.

There are a number of people affected by dementia in our office in some way or another, and charities like Together Dementia Support are really helping to plug a vital gap in the system where people with dementia and their carers are not supported.

Please donate what you can to help people with dementia and their carers live positively.

Nicola Gardner, on behalf of the 2020 Thermo Fisher Flyers.

The Thermo Fisher Flyers this year are Nicola Gardner, Antony Danaos, Amy Lee, Kevin Smith, Matt Nagler, Mike Carroll, Sharon Ditte, Neil Holt.

Supporting

Together Dementia Support

Together Dementia Support is a local charity that aims to help people live positively with dementia. We do this by supporting both carers and the people for whom they care. Primarily we run a range of weekly and monthly activity groups, enabling people with dementia to get out and meet others, enjoying stimulating activities together. Some groups offer a wide range of activities whilst others have a particular focus (Walk & Talk, Gospel Choir, Creative Club, Pyaari Yaadein (for S Asian elders). Transport is provided to all groups enabling even the most socially isolated people to get out. We also run a Carers' drop-In offering therapeutic massage and other activities as well as training and information sessions. Our Fabulous Forgetful Friends group enables people living with dementia to campaign, influence, and train others about living with dementia. We are a small team of staff with a much larger and diverse team of volunteers
