Rugby can be proud of a citizen who is a world class bowler who has a vast collection of medals including a World Championship Gold and has been selected to bowl for England in the International Blind Bowls Association Championships in New Zealand in 2027
In order for her to compete in the Championships she needs to raise £4,500 to pay for her entry fees, air fares, accommodation and the other costs that she will incur.
Margaret Cusker is registered as completely blind and competes with the assistance of a guide who tells her how far her last bowl is from the jack and the position of her opponent's bowls so that Margaret can decide how to bowl her next ball. She started competing at national level in 1996 when she only won one game but in doing so beat the World Champion!! Since then she has won either a silver or gold medal at every national competition! She has taken part in five World Championships, which are held every 4 years, winning medals at events held in Australia, Israel and New Zealand. She is most justifiably proud of winning the Gold medal to become World Champion in Melbourne in 2009. She plans to retire from international competition after the championships in New Zealand.
Margaret is a member of two social clubs organised by Rotary Clubs in Rugby for people who are visually impaired
The Rotary Club of Rugby Dunsmore has set up a fundraising page to help her on her way and has already raised £410!
Willy Goldschmidt, organiser of the Hillmorton Social Club said “Margaret is a very modest but totally inspirational member of our social club and it would be great to help her, hopefully, achieve another medal to polish off her career.”
