I am taking part in the Great North Run this year to raise funds for LIVErNORTH. The charity is run by volunteers and ALL money raised goes to help ALL liver patients.
The reason for this is because my Mam suffers with an autoimmune liver disease called Primary Biliary Cholangitis, PBC for short, which affects the bile ducts in the liver.
She was diagnosed in 2009 after a routine blood test and is under regular review at the Freeman Hospital.
Her Auntie and Uncle both had PBC and needed liver transplants.
Many of her close relatives and all friends bar one are unaware of her illness. She feels that there is a stigma relating to liver disease and doesn't want people to think that her disease is due to alcohol consumption. It certainly isn't.
