We have not had the best start to 2025!
On New Year's Day, we awoke to a flooded turnout field - the River Mersey, which borders our paddock, had burst its banks, submerging the whole field. Once the water had receeded enough to survey the damage, it was clear that a lot of work would need to be undertaken before the field would be safe for the horses. The fences had come down, the river bank had collapsed in places, and the ground was full of debris. Fortunately for us, our horses were safe and dry in their stables - some nearby yards were not so lucky. Unfortunately, a couple of days later, the freezing temperatures hit and we were subjected to snow and ice, meaning that any work to repair the damage in the field would be delayed.
Currently our horses have had no turnout since New Years Eve. We are looking after them as best we can, walking them daily and they are still being exercised by us and their loaners. The yard staff at North Cheshire have been working incredibly hard in these terrible conditions and we are so thankful to them for all their efforts! Tyson, Bobby and Hector are understandably frustrated at being kept in their stables 24/7 and have become restless. We have had to take the decision to cancel our Sunday sessions for the time being for the safety or our participants and volunteers. This is not a decision we have taken lightly - we rely on our session fees to cover a proportion of our horse upkeep costs, which are currently higher than usual as we need to pay for additional bedding and feed.
