Story

Last year in the summer term, our year 4 children (current year 5) had ten trumpet lessons with a brass tutor from Merton Music Foundation. Never having played a brass instrument, I also took part in these group lessons. It was a real learning experience to be a complete beginner again, struggling to produce a note let alone play a melody!

So...as a musical challenge and to raise some money for the school, I put myself in for Grade 1 trumpet at the end of November. It has been 30 years since I last sat a music exam - and learning a new instrument is requiring a HUGE AMOUNT of practice and patience! (Our poor neighbours...!)

Along with my colleagues who are running the 10K in December, I hope to raise £800 which will go towards equipment for the ICT suite and the new piano for the music room. Thank you in advance for your support and wish me luck for the exam on 26 November!

Updates

The exam was yesterday! Beforehand both Simon (my accompanist) and I felt ridiculously nervous (and a little self-conscious in a waiting room full of children!) but we kept focussing on the fundraising and your generous donations, which will make such a HUGE difference to the school. Sincere and heartfelt thanks to you all!

The exam itself was fine. My lips were tired from too much practice, so a few notes didn't come out - very frustrating - but otherwise everything went well. It has been a real challenge - not least for my family and neighbours! - to learn a loud, new instrument over the last few weeks. But I have really enjoyed it and learned a great deal about the wonderful world of brass instruments. I'm thinking I might continue...

Thank you all once again for your support!

FRIENDS OF BISHOP GILPIN

Friends of Bishop Gilpin (FOBG) is the name for the parent-teacher association. It is a registered charity and run by a committee of parents and staff. The committee meets once every half term. All members of the school community are welcome to attend FOBG meetings and are encouraged to get involved in our activities.

As the fundraising arm of the school, FOBG holds several events throughout the year. These activities vary from year to year, but typically include summer and winter fairs, quiz nights, Christmas activities, an auction of promises (held every two years), cake sales, and more.

The funds we raise are spent on projects that directly benefit our children in their education and play. We also donate some of the funds raised to selected charities.
