Hi, my name's Jessica Harrington, I am running the ASICS 10k in London for the charity UP - The Adult Cerebral Palsy Movement.
Some of you that know us will understand why I am running in the name of cerebral palsy and those who don't let me explain.
My partner of 4 years Tom like others was born with a type of CP called spastic diplegia. Tom considers himself lucky as he says he has lived a "normal' life so far, and people outside our closest circle would agree.
What some people don't know as Tom hides it is that he struggles a lot more than people think. Tom works very hard to provide for our family and I am so proud of him, but although he doesn't tell me I can tell when he has had a hard day and I can tell when he is struggling. This is almost everyday now.
Everyone with cerebral palsy has there own struggles and not all symptoms are easy for others to see. I myself am still learning about Toms condition and different ways to help him.
UP is a charity Tom and I chose based on the struggles we have faced trying to find support and information as an adult with Cerebral palsy. There are plenty of other charities doing amazing work for children with CP or those with severe cases of CP, but UP was the only charity we found that will help and support every adult with CP and really fill that void. Especially in Tom's case where his mobility will get worse, UP can provide support and advice with ways to stay mobile for as long as possible. UP is spreading awareness and has a vision that all adults with CP will have access to personalised and integrated medical services to meet their changing needs.
