Can She Beat the Bog?
On Sunday, August 24th, 2025, the High Sheriff of Powys, Sally Roberts, will participate in the annual World Bog Snorkelling Championships held in Llanwrtyd Wells, raising money for her chosen charity, Ponthafren. If you're inspired by Sally, Ponthafren's gym and squash court promote positive mental and physical wellbeing in our Welshpool centre.
The World Bog Snorkelling Championship was first conceived in the Neuadd Arms in Llanwrtyd Wells. This quirky event has become an essential part of the sporting calendar in Mid Wales. Competitors race to swim as fast as possible through a murky trench cut into the Waen Rhydd bog. The current record, set by World Champion Neil Rutter in 2023, stands at 1 minute and 12.34 seconds. Now, more than three decades after its inception, the event attracts participants from around the globe. The Lonely Planet even named it one of the world's top 50 'must-do' experiences.
