Story

I am running my first half marathon to raise money for a couple of amazing organisations - Mermaids and TransActual.

In light of rising hostility, misinformation and outright transphobia from the press and a number of prominent figures, TransActual has been highlighting and amplifying the voices of trans people boosting representation in a constant effort to improve legal recognition, medical care and human rights. Mermaids has been supporting and protecting trans, non-binary and gender diverse youth since 1995 and do truly inspiring and vital work.

Both organisations have been great resources for educating and informing myself and I would love to help out in any small way I can. If you could contribute in any way I would be hugely grateful. I also really hate running so this should be interesting.

Mermaids

Mermaids has been supporting transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children, young people, and their families since 1995.

Back at the start, we were a small group of concerned parents sitting around the kitchen table, coming together to share experiences, find answers and look for ways to keep our children safe and happy.

Today, Mermaids has evolved into one of the UK’s leading LGBTQ+ charities, empowering thousands of people with its secure online communities, local community groups, helpline services, web resources, events and residential weekends.

We also seek to educate and inform wider society on gender identity by helping professionals accommodate and reassure gender-diverse young people.

TransActual

TransActual UK was founded by a group of British trans people in 2017 as a response to increasing press hostility, transphobia and misinformation. We are run by the trans community, with the trans community, for the trans community. In June 2020 we expanded our scope and remit so that may: 1. Share reliable information about trans people's lives and about trans rights in the UK, as well as dispelling common myths 2. Amplify the voices of trans people so that the wider world may hear the experiences of a wide range of trans men, trans women and non-binary people 3. Educate people about trans people's lives and the issues we face 4. Advocate for trans people 5. Empower trans people to make bring about change in their lives and in the community We are working to improve: ? 1. Trans people's experiences of healthcare.? 2. Legal recognition & protections for trans people. 3. Improved media representation of trans people and an end to press transphobia.
