On the 19th September I completed the Fred Whitton challenge, something I had been dreading since I booked it in 2019! With 180km of views and 3500m of hills the Fred is not an easy ride. To quote one cycling book:
If you only ride one sportive, make it the Fred Whitton Challenge - the Daddy of them all. Some may be longer and some may gain more in elevation, but the relentless severity of the Lakes' passes will test any rider!
I didn't even consider sponsorship before the ride because I was planning to bail at the last minute!
Now it is over I'd like to raise for a very worthy cause.
This last year has been sad for many but none more so than my best mate from college and his wonderful wife and daughter. They lost their son and brother to cancer from a genetic condition called Lynch Syndrome. It lays dormant in people's DNA and, if it attacks, it often does so at an early age. My friend's son died from an aggressive brain cancer after 18months of suffering. He was 20 and had his whole life ahead of him. I have never attended a sadder funeral.
Although no cure yet exists the risks can be identified through genetic testing. Preventative measures can then be taken to enhance longevity and quality of life. A staggering 0.1% of the global population is believed to carry this condition, the majority have no idea.
I will be donating to the Lynch Syndrome UK to support their amazing work, I hope you will too.
Many thanks, Ken
