No, not trans-Atlantic! I am planning to do a bike ride of three days at around 60 miles a day along the French Atlantic Coast from La Rochelle to Bordeaux on 3-5 May 2024, along sections of La Vélodyssée, a dedicated cycle route. I assure you that this is going to be quite a challenge for a 76 year old!! I shall be cycling as part of a small team from the Worshipful Company of Curriers of the City of London, a Livery Company of which I was the Clerk from 2002- 2011 and have been a Liveryman (full member) of the Company from 2006 until the present day. The Curriers' Company can trace its origins as a trade Guild of finishers of leather from the 13th Century and today supports the leather industry at large in a number of ways. This ride is a fundraiser for the Leather & Hide Trades Benevolent Institute (LHTBI), which helps to support aged or incapacitated leather workers, or their bereaved spouses, who are in need of help. The small charity has been operating for 163 years and provides practical help with such things as mobility vehicles or the installation of stairlifts and accessible showers in the home.
The ride is organised by the LHTBI and the Curriers' team will be riding alongside a LHBTI team. In addition to fundraising for that charity, we are allowed to raise money for our own favourite charities. In my case, I shall be fundraising for Parkinson's UK that supports research into that awful disease that took Vivienne, my darling wife of 51 years from me in February 2023. There is no cure for Parkinson's, a debilitating and progressive neurological disease; its symptoms can be mitigated but not indefinitely, so much more research is needed. I would therefore ask you to decide on your donation and make half of it to the LHTBI on this page and then follow this link to my
