Story

More than 5000 Croydon residents have served in the UK armed forces. Many now face complex challenges, including mental health struggles, housing insecurity, and unemployment. We owe them more than gratitude. We owe them support.

We are raising funds for SSAFA Croydon and the Royal British Legion to provide vital services to local veterans and their families. Your donation will help deliver:

- Mental Health Support – Counselling, PTSD support and wellbeing programmes.

- Housing Assistance – Emergency accommodation and long-term housing solutions.

- Employment Support – Job training, career advice and transition support.

- Financial Relief – Help with daily costs, mobility aids and essential care.

This campaign was inspired by the remarkable work of Michael Lyons, a New Addington resident and ex-serviceman who campaigned tirelessly for the recognition of 26 WWI soldiers who suffered from PTSD, were institutionalised at Cane Hill Asylum and buried without honour. Michael’s dedication ensured that their service would not be forgotten.

Two candles were lit at Westminster Abbey in Michael’s memory and to honour those soldiers' lives. Now, we are continuing his legacy by ensuring that veterans in Croydon receive the support they deserve.

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is a trusted source of support for serving personnel (regular and reserve), veterans and their families in their time of need. Our teams of trained volunteers and employees provide practical, emotional, and financial assistance to the Armed Forces community enabling them to thrive. In essence, SSAFA is there to make sure ‘no one ever battles alone’. London SW Branch serves the needs of our Armed Forces community in these six London Boroughs - Croydon, Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton, and Wandsworth. We offer practical, emotional and financial support for serving personnel, reserves, veterans and their families every day. This includes anyone who completed National Service. SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is a trusted source of support for serving personnel (regular and reserve), veterans and their families in their time of need. Our teams of trained volunteers and employees provide practical, emotional, and financial assistance to the Armed Forces community enabling them to thrive. In essence, SSAFA is there to make sure ‘no one ever battles alone’.
