I'm a teacher and since 2019 I have dedicated part of my school holidays to walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats in stages, whilst also raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society, in memory of my wonderful mum, Deb. Dementia is a cruel disease and the effects are devastating: there is no cure and only limited treatment available. The Alzheimer's Society are working to bring hope to sufferers and their loved ones by working to understand the causes, improve diagnosis and care, identify ways to prevent dementia and search for a cure.
This is a self-financed, unsupported, solo endeavour; I have planned and walked every step of the way, making use of the National Cycle Network, canal towpaths, disused railway paths, and other trails and quiet roads. Accommodation has generally been in B&Bs and small hotels, and I have carried an 8-9 kilo pack the majority of the way.
In order to complete the final stage of my walk, I had to travel up to the north of Scotland to be in Lairg on a Wednesday in order to catch the once-weekly bus that would drop me at my start point, the Crask Inn, frankly in the middle of nowhere. A rather circuitous route took me through the blanket bog of the wonderfully atmospheric and remote Flow Country, and then along the coast to finally reach John O'Groats on Mon 14th April. I was blessed with good weather, met some great people, saw interesting wildlife and experienced some incredible landscapes. What an adventure.
Thank you very much to everyone who has encouraged and supported me, and a huge, huge thank you to everyone who has donated. If you would still like to donate, that would be fantastic. Any donation to help this deserving cause, no matter how modest, would be greatly appreciated.
