SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST IS THE UK'S BIGGEST KILLER. 100,000 PEOPLE PER YEAR. 15 YOUNG PEOPLE A WEEK.
On May 26th 2024, Cali-Beth & Kate will be running the Edinburgh Marathon to raise funds for North East Hearts with Goals. North East Hearts with Goals (NEHWG) works to place life-saving defibrillators (AEDs) into public places such as schools, colleges and sports clubs & raise awareness of the importance of CPR. The charity has placed over nearly 500 defibrillators around the North East and arranged training to use them, as well as heart screening and counselling for those affected.
NEHWG is a charity that has supported Cali-Beth's family for several years as herself and many members of her family are diagnosed with Long QT Syndrome; a genetic condition which can cause life-threatening arrhythmias, seizures and sudden cardiac arrest. As a result, the incredible team at NEHWG have supplied multiple defibrillators to the family through their Heartsafe Homes campaign, which can be vital if a cardiac arrest was to occur in the home.
On 7th January the importance of this life-saving resource was shown after Cali-Beth found her Nana, Liz, in cardiac arrest. The defibrillator they had at home delivered two shocks and, alongside CPR, was used to restart Liz's heart rhythm before the ambulance crew arrived. Liz is not one of the family members diagnosed with Long QT, but thankfully the defibrillator donated by NEHWG was on scene and helped save her life.
The charity rely on fundraising to allow them carry out their important work and the supply & upkeep of defibrillators, replacement pads and batteries is costly. To support their cause we will be carrying, supporting and dragging each other through all 26.2 miles of the Edinburgh Marathon this Spring (a first for both of us!!).
