I have never been a great runner, but took on long distance running since the diagnosis of my daughter Amelia with a rare genetic disorder called Metochromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) in October 2020 aged just 3 years old. MLD is a rare genetically inherited illness which affects around 1 in every 100,000 people. An inherent error in the patients metabolic system causes progressive damage to the nervous system, resulting in life-long disability and death. We were told Amelia can expect to live until no more than 5-6 years. This was clearly devastating news for us as a family. Amelia, aged now 8, despite losing all muscle control is doing reasonably well. What made us and other MLD families like us survive through this ordeal is the great support we received from small charities like ArchAngel MLD Trust.
ArchAngel MLD Trust supports medical teams around the world who are working to help people with the rare genetic illness MLD. ArchAngel also awards private grants to UK families with MLD affected children and is leading the work required to have MLD added to the UK newborn bloodspot test, to ensure that future MLD affected babies have the chance to receive life-saving treatment.
