Story

Hello Dear Comrades,

For reasons unknown to logic and sense I will be ‘running’ the London Marathon again in 2025. The mind shudders, the body breaks.

I’ve been tempted Rocky style out of running retirement to raise money for the Outside Project. They’re a fantastic LGBTIQ+ community centre, shelter and domestic abuse refuge, working with some of the most vulnerable in our community. These include night shelters for trans individuals who are at risk of homelessness, outreach services for the ‘hidden homeless’ and refuges for queer and gender diverse survivors of domestic abuse and homelessness.

Now for the serious bit. We know that London is a ridiculous city to find somewhere to live in, with rental costs absurd and housing stock not matching demand. Unfortunately LGBTQ+ individuals are at even more risk of homelessness, due to a combination of reasons – including family disownment, inability to reach tailored services and higher rates of mental health issues. The problem is even more acute in the trans community, with a quarter of trans people facing homelessness during their lives. They also might not feel safe accessing services due to societal transphobia. Therefore its vital that services like the Outside Project exist – however without donations, they wouldn’t be able to do this.

Honestly it’s a no-brainer to sponsor. Not only are you donating towards a fantastic organisation that performs vital work, but what a great opportunity to see me suffer. Oh, and the more you donate, the less tempted I will be to annoyingly post my Strava training times on Instagram. Who could refuse such a threat?

Will I improve my time to finish three seconds ahead of Ollie James-Parr? Can I once again avoid doing a Paula Radcliffe as I cross Tower Bridge? Am I able to finally avenge the Teletubby that beat me in a sprint finish last time around? All this and more shall be revealed on Sunday 27th April.

I know times are tight and tough, but any money you could spare would be hugely ap

Supporting

The Outside Project

The UK’s first LGBTIQ+ Community Shelter and Centre. A grassroots movement led by LGBTIQ+ ex-homeless, homelessness professionals and activists.

In winter 2017 we opened the UK’s first LGBTIQ+ Shelter. In Spring 2019 we opened our Community Centre in Central London, just a stones throw from the Lesbian and Gay Centre of the 80’s. Over 7000sqft of open, office and residential space, this unique and innovative project is home to our shelter and the support, creative and activist groups we work alongside.

During the 50th anniversary year of the Stonewall Riots it is fitting to flip the narrative, centring our homeless siblings and those who feel left outside of mainstream and LGBTIQ+ spaces. The centre and shelter has made an immeasurable difference to our guests who will always be loudly and proudly at the centre of this project. We’re grateful for the support from the Mayor of London and our LGBTIQ+ community and allies across the country. We can’t thank you enough for standing beside us.

 Carla Ecola, Founder and Director.
