Story

Please help us raise money for 32-year-old Jamila who is living in one room with her four children without sanitation and basic conveniences, such as mattresses. Jamila’s life has been characterized by neglect, abuse, childhood marriage and loss. She is struggling to earn a basic income to pay for food and rent for herself and her children, all of which are HIV positive. Jamila has lost one baby, her youngest two children are severely malnourished and currently in rehabilitation, the older two are of school age, but the family cannot afford to send them.

A new house would allow the small amount of household income Jamila earns to go towards regular food and to support school attendance for her children.  Please help us raise money to improve their living conditions.

Our local partner supports this investment by finding local builders, procuring the supplies and project managing the build.

Projects in 2021 with 15- to 18-year-old students will continue to support the familiy and develop the home including the creation of a home garden for food, donating mattresses and clothing for the family.

The Great Generation

The Great Generation is a social enterprise with charitable status. We are committed to challenging the prevailing issues felt by communities living in tough economic and social conditions. We deliver experiential learning programmes in which students and professionals use their skills in collaboration with a local community in the developing world to address a specific local problem. We believe it is individuals and communities learning and acting together that releases untapped potential to make the most of our resources: people and the planet. Participants fundraise for their project participation and for any investment in the community. We find that positive social impact happens when projects are built to respond to local needs in close cooperation with local partners to support and own the project after the team has left thus leaving a legacy to be taken over by the following generations; creating a relay team of experts. We focus on education, income generation and community development in response to local needs. Our name is inspired by a quote from Nelson Mandela, and sums up what we are aiming to achieve: Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation.
