Story

Challenge:

I am taking part in the Devizes-to-Westminster canoe race in a C2. The race is 125 miles straight through, without stopping. The harder part is running around the 77 portages (where we need to carry the boat), or at least it's the part I hate most!

We are expecting the race to take about 28 hours to complete, although this will be affected by the river flow. We will complete the race on April 9th, Easter Sunday.

If that’s not enough, we are also completing a 28-mile race and a 34-mile race in the weeks leading up to the event. We already completed a 23-mile race on March 12th and are training six days a week minimum.

I have also stopped drinking until April 9th, as alcohol probably does not help with training!

I am raising money for two charities, with 50% to go to mental-health charity Mind, and 50% to TEECH, a charity that funds local projects in Eastern Europe.

The donations to Mind are being made in memory of my friend Matthew Clark, who sadly passed away in 2021, for a cause that was important to him.

TEECH is a charity that has been taking aid directly to Moldova (the poorest country in Europe) since 1998, and has also recently organised aid for Ukraine. The money is used directly for buying food and clothing to be contributed, as well as transportation. It's a small charity and many of the volunteers use their own time to take aid directly to those in need.

We are hoping to raise £2000. I'm very grateful for any contribution you feel able to make.

If you wish to sponsor me for this 125 mile race, you can contribute by using this link. Still working the website out.

Updates

So after 125 miles, more than 77 portages and 26hr 23mins, WE DID IT! A massive thank you to the support crew who were with us all the way! A big thank you to the umpires and all the volunteers who make the race safe and function! Also a thank you to all the people who played little roles from picking us up at the end and anyone involved with training!

There's still time to donate to a worthy cause!

Supporting

TEECH

TEECH was established in 1998 when a group, took up the challenge from a colleague to help repair two hospitals in Bucharest. About fifty volunteers travelled to Bucharest, under the banner of ‘BTL Aid to Romania’ in August that year and set about painting, plastering, providing lighting and generally making the hospitals cleaner, safer and brighter places. After the success of this trip, and seeing the need to be more structured the volunteers organised themselves into a Registered Charity and hence TEECH (Telecommunications Eastern European Challenge) was born. TEECH is a small independent charity, run by an unpaid team of volunteers, which welcomes volunteers from all walks life.
