About

Support the Ultra Distance Scholarship in their mission to diversify the start lines of ultra cycling races.

The UDS have made it their goal to help support a more diverse field of riders to experience this incredible sport, and the welcoming community that comes along with it — That’s where you come in!

The Challenge

A strong band of UDS community members and allies are taking on the challenge of completing an Everest — 8848 meters! — at the notorious Stwlan Dam road climb in Wales in a grand effort to fundraise for the Ultra Distance Scholarship. Some heroes who can’t be with us at Stwlan will be crushing this challenge on their own local hill, or online in the unforgiving land of Zwift.

The Stwlan Dam is known for its stunning views, unpredictable weather, and winding hairpins. The climb itself has an average gradient of 10%, gaining 277 m in 2.8 kms. The steepest 500 m averages 12.1%. This climb is not for the faint-hearted, and requires a good level of fitness and experience to conquer. 33 ascents of this travail spells a completed Everest for our determined fundraiser riders.

The Cause

What is the Ultra Distance Scholarship and what do we do? The Ultra Distance Scholarship was established in 2020 and is a non-profit organisation committed to increasing diversity and representation in ultra distance cycling and racing. To achieve this, the UDS provides opportunities to individuals who demonstrate a passion for ultra-cycling in the form of an annual athletic scholarship for people of colour, to be supported in a training journey towards a distinguished ultra cycling race. The support provided each year includes an endurance bike, bike fitting, coaching, cycling apparel and kit, bikepacking bags, GPS computer, training equipment, and mentorship.

Beyond the yearly Scholarship program, the UDS works to be a positive voice in the community, elevating the UDS message and spending time, money, and resources on workshops,

Supporting

Ultra Distance Scholarship

The Ultra Distance Scholarship is dedicated to diversifying the start lines of ultra-distance cycling races by providing scholarships, mentorship, and resources to individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, enabling them to participate and excel in these challenging events. We work to: 1) promote diversity and inclusion in ultra-distance cycling races. 2) provide financial and logistical support to individuals who would otherwise face barriers to entry. 3) to offer mentorship and training opportunities to scholarship recipients. 4) to collaborate with cycling race organisers to create a more inclusive and equitable racing environment.
