It’s a New Year. What’s new for the Jews of Ethiopia?

They survived COVID only to be confronted with war in Tigray – a war that spilled over into Amhara province, coming within fifty miles of our Gondar community.

• How has the war impacted on the community?

• How much do you know about what happened?

On Sunday 23rd January at 5.00pm Meketa is holding a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony to discuss these questions with special guests:

Zoe Wildig – Head of Governance at the British Embassy, Addis Ababa

Brian Lovatt – Director Simien Mountains Mobile Medical Service

And:

Sybil Sheridan – Chair of Trustees, Meketa

with a video update of events in the Shutafut After School Club in Gondar

The Community really need our help. As inflation soars and food becomes a luxury, work becomes harder to come by. Meketa has had to pause its work development programmes and focus more on ensuring the community has enough to survive.

Meketa means support in Amharic. Meketa supports Jewish adults and children in Gondar, Ethiopia who have not been able to join their families in Israel. It gives grants to enable children to remain in education, supports extra curricula educational activities and a homework club, provides grants for training courses and loans for business start- ups. It supports individuals and families in need - all with a view to moving towards stable income generation and out of the poverty trap
