Dr Adam White will give a talk on the 16th and 17th century monuments found in Westminster Abbey, home to the finest group of church monuments in the world. This lecture concentrates on the monuments of the Early Modern Period, beginning with Henry VII and Elizabeth of York in the Henry VII Chapel and ending with the monuments of the Commonwealth period. On the way we shall pass by Elizabeth 1, Mary Queen of Scots and many other distinguished figures- and some less distinguished. The Abbey is a sculptor gallery without parallel and offers remarkable insights into British social history.
