An Exploration of Knaresborough
Knaresborough Museum, Castle & St John the Baptist Church
Tuesday September 9th 11 15am – 3 30pm
We will start our tour by meeting at 11 15 am in the Methodist Centre in Gracious Street for coffee & an introduction to the Castle by David Rhodes, who was the former Chief Planning Officer for Harrogate District Council, then after time for a self- funded lunch in one of the many cafés in the town from 12- 1 pm, we will visit the interesting Courthouse Museum & what is still surviving of the Castle. The Castle, dating from the reign of Henry 1 (1100-1135) it was extensively rebuilt in the 14th century when it became a royal residence. During the Civil War it was besieged from November to December 1644 before surrendering to the Parliamentary forces. After the war it was sleighted and much of the Castle, apart from the King’s Tower was blown up.
From the Castle it is a steep walk down to the impressive St John the Baptist Church, where at 2pm we will have a combined tour of its mainly 15th century interior and the important collection of the Slingsby family funeral monuments with Jane Crease & Moira Fulton. We will complete our visit with tea & cake in the adjacent parish rooms, The Hub, which has magnificent views down to the river Nidd.
Parking directions, a map and further information will be provided in advance of the event.
