This tour of 3 churches, all very close together along the Roman road from Malton, differs from our usual events, in that it involves, in the afternoon, a stretch of quite strenuous walking on a rough path, so it does involve some reasonable degree of mobility.
We will begin our tour, with Jane Crease, at 11am in the small Norman church of North Grimston, its most noteworthy feature is the impressive carved Norman font with scenes of the Last Supper. From there we will drive the short, 2 ½ mile distance to St Mary’s, Wharram le Street. Here the Church with its impressive late Anglo-Saxon tower is set in an isolated, picturesque position, well back from the main road. As there are no pubs or cafés nearby, we will then break, around 12 15pm to allow time for lunch. Sledmere with its excellent café is 10 minutes- drive away or a picnic lunch can be taken in the English Heritage car park for our next destination, the ruined church of the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy. There are no toilets facilities in the car park but there are toilets 4.5 miles away at the junction of B1248/B1251. The path from the car park to the deserted village runs quite steeply down-hill, it takes about 20-25minutes and is well marked, but it is not suitable for those with difficulty in walking or with mobility problems. We will meet on the site of St Martin’s church at 2pm for a tour of its very interesting remains. After further time to explore the site, tea & cake will be served on our return to the car park, by Jane & Moira at 4pm.
