The CIFA Trust is a small Scottish-registered charity established in 2006. Unlike many charities, we are run entirely on the goodwill of five trustees that together have over a century of relevant professional work experience, including many years living and working in the African continent.
We currently focus on supporting a small number of communities in northern Malawi to improve their income through transitioning from being subsistence farmers to organising themselves as groups and being able to benefit from better market opportunities. We are doing this through things like supporting access to solar-powered irrigation and helping link farmers to markets for higher value produce. This approach offers a meaningful and sustainable route out of poverty, enabling families to access nutritious food, send their children to school and cover health costs and other essentials.
All of our work is based around the following three principles:
1) Ensuring the initiatives we support are determined by the people and communities that will ultimately benefit;
2) Ensuring we design and implement any activities in a way that they continue to benefit people over the longer term; and
3) Working with a smaller number of communities and households at any one time so that what we do will truly transform people’s lives.
