Temple Raiders bike group run by Tyneside Outdoors (TO) in Temple Park, South Shields. The age range is 11 to 16 years old, with older members becoming young volunteers as they learn and develop through the group's activities.
The group was formed following a young people's heritage project run by TO which carried out an archaeological survey on the 1980s BMX Dirt Track situated in Temple Park. The name reflects the 1980s theme of the project and is a nod to the film franchise Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc. starring Harrison Ford (also a keen cyclist) as the famed archaeologist 'Indy'. Temple Raiders aims to help young people have as much fun as they can on a bike. This includes activities such as bike games in Temple Park, bike rides around Tyne and Wear, Cycle Speedway, Mountain Biking and a current favourite BMX Racing.
Temple Raiders is the newest team in the region to enter the recent, Race Around The Region, organised by Barnesbury BMX. Our group race on donated and borrowed BMXs and borrow helmets, pads and gloves to compete.
Temple Raiders has no base at the moment. Our weekly meetings involve bike repairs in the overflow car park and bike games and activities around the park. We'd love to have our own base where we can store our own decent racing BMXs and mountain bikes and to store our tools and equipment. A base would also give us a place to get out of the rain when we need to fix and maintain our bikes and repair other young people's bikes.
Our group depends on fundraising all of our own costs, for bike repairs, weekly group meetings and trips for activities and races. You can help us by getting involved in our fundraising activities or donating to our group.
