About

The Northampton and Lamport Railway CIO owns coach No.3919, which is a BR Mk 1 Tourist Second Open (TSO) coach built at Eastleigh Works in 1955.

The coach arrived at the NLR in 1990, but was in need of significant restoration.

Restoration began in earnest in 2016 and is being undertaken by a group of our volunteers. The restoration is expected to cost roughly £25,000 in total.

To date the southern seating compartment has been painstakingly restored to a very high standard (see photo below). The northern end of the coach has also had structural steelwork repairs. Work is currently underway on the northern seating compartment.

Essential works still outstanding include:

1). Restoration of northern, southern and central vestibule areas, with repairs to doors, floors, toilet compartments, etc.

2). Repairs to structural steelwork on the southern end

3). Repairs to external bodywork sheets and complete external re-paint

4). Repairs to the underframe including: brakes, brake blocks, bogies, etc.

The coach will be restored in crimson and cream (aka 'blood and custard') livery.

Once complete it will give visitors to the railway the chance to experience genuine 1950s rail travel in the UK.

Please donate today to make this project a reality.

Thank you

WELCOME TO THE NEW FUNDRAISING PAGE FOR THE NORTHAMPTON AND LAMPORT RAILWAY CIO

The Northampton & Lamport Railway (NLR) is a steam and heritage diesel tourist railway in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside. Located just 5 miles north of Northampton, we currently have approximately one-and-a-half miles of running track along the old Northampton to Market Harborough line. This route is now the Brampton Valley Way (a 14-mile linear park) so you can not only ride one of our trains along the former line, but also walk along and watch the steam and diesel engines in action.

First established in 1984, we are run purely by volunteers and have been operating train services since 1995. We are currently working to complete our half mile southern extension to Boughton, before then pushing north a further one-and-a-half miles to Spratton.
