The Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus) is an endangered primate species (IUCN Red List, 2012). The numbers have been declining rapidly in the last decennia, caused by over exploitation of natural resources in habitat areas, habitat destruction and the unsustainable illegal trade in infant macaques in Morocco and to Europe. The Moroccan Primate Conservation Foundation (MPC) has worked on the conservation of the Barbary macaque in Morocco for almost a decade. MPC’s mission is to protect the endangered Barbary macaque by scientific research, species and habitat conservation, educational programmes, lobby with the Moroccan government and the European Union, rehabilitation of Barbary macaques and all other actions needed to protect the species from going extinct.
