The Morecambe Bay Prawner Trust is a charity that has been up to preserve and maintain in sailing condition Spray, a prawner built in 1896 by Crossfields of Arnside for John Gardiner of Morecambe. Prawners (or Nobbies) were an important fishing boat type in the Irish Sea between North Wales and Scotland. There were over 100 prawners at both Morecambe and Fleetwood in the 1900s. Morecambe Bay Prawners were fast sail-powered fishing boats designed to get a perishable catch back to market as quickly as possible.
Spray is one of the oldest surviving prawners. In 1896 when she was built Queen Victoria was queen, the Marquess of Salisbury Prime Minister, the British Empire at its peak, the first Olympic Games were held and the law requiring a person to walk in front of a vehicle with a red flag was lifted. In Morecambe horse drawn trams operated on the sea front and the now long gone West End Pier was opened.
