Earl's Court Youth Club
Built in 1979 on a World War II bombsite, the Club was set up with the help of John Sainsbury and managed by local residents for the youth living locally. This part of London is one of the more deprived areas, with a very high proportion of bed and breakfast accommodation, asylum seekers, and with 42 different languages spoken within a one-mile radius. The local unemployment rate amongst young people is well above the national average. There are also problems with drugs and crime. In 2006 the club was completely refurbished and modernised, and was re-opened for members in February 2007. The club became independent for the first time in this year and operates as a self-controlled charity but with the support of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, which funds the salaries of the club’s staff.
