About

We set up da Café to provide a safe and tolerant space for young people in Lewick so that they can feel valued.

OPEN runs a weekly space for young people (14-25) in the Olive Tree on Thursdays 4pm-6pm. Da Café is there to give young people in Shetland a space to go, where they don't have to spend money to sit in the warmth and access free Wi-Fi. We are also running a Peer Research project to listen to young people's needs within the community.

£5 would get a young person either a panini or a coffee and a cake.

Currently we are seeing anywhere from 30-40 young people in attendance each week.

Updates

We did it!

We have now reached our goal of £350 to help us to open up for an extra day until the October holidays! We still welcome any donations as this will go towards any other costs such as providing free refreshments for young people on a Thursday.

A massive thank you to everyone who donated and/or shared this page! It is amazing to see so many people in the community support our young people :)

We will be reviewing whether or not we continue to open on Fridays 2-4 after the holidays, this decision will be led by the young people based on if it is the best time that works for everyone or is a different day more suitable? We will keep you updated on our journey here and on our social media pages.

We are currently trying to raise £350 to cover costs for opening additional hours. We are testing out opening on a Friday 4pm-6pm from now until the October holidays. Friday 4pm-6pm was voted the most popular time with the young people attending and we hope to continue this after the October holidays as well.

As of today (25/08/22) We have raised £120 so we still need to raise £230!

Any little helps, as well as sharing our donations page. Thank you :)

OPEN

OPEN is a youth-led and youth-governed charity, our mission is to make Shetland a place where young people can thrive! We have a range of activities for young people in Shetland, read below to find out more.

Peer Education: OPEN recruits and trains young people aged 16-25 to become 'peer educators'. OPEN's main purpose is to embed peer education across Shetland as a methodology of raising awareness and encouraging positive lifestyle choices - especially on issues concerning substance use, relationships, sexual health, and mental health; whilst promoting harm reduction at every opportunity.

Peer Mentoring: OPEN also operate a Peer Mentoring Programme; with the aim to recruit and match mentors (16-25) with mentees (14-21), to facilitate peer-to-peer mentoring sessions for young people who are care experienced and/or in the youth justice system as well as any disadvantaged young people at risk of social isolation or exclusion.

Da Cafe: OPEN runs a space for young people (14-25) in Market House on Mondays and The Hub on Thursdays 4pm-6pm. Da Cafe is there to give young people in Shetland a space to go, where they don't have to spend money to sit in the warmth and access free Wi-Fi.

Peer research: OPEN carries out peer research projects around issues that young people in Shetland face. Our board set the topic of each project based on needs identified from previous projects.

OPEN Board & Youth Governance: OPEN is run by a Board of Trustees aged 16-29, they work together to run the organisation, supported & trained by the organisation development lead and external board mentors. OPEN can also support other young people in this age bracket who would like to take on other leadership and governance roles within the community.
