Tribute
A Halloween display opposite Cairnshill Playing Fields, Belfast to raise funds for Crosskennan Animal Sanctuary, in memory of Lucas who passed away in September 2025. Lucas was an ambassador of Crosskennan and represented the heart of the sanctuary's work. His life was a true example of how Crosskennan can turn an animal's life around which it has done for so many for almost 30 years.
Lucas' story
Lucas was bred to be a champion on the race track in America and sold to a home in Ireland where he had big hopes.
In 2003, Crosskennan met Lucas, abandoned in a meat yard. He was starving, depressed and not even 5 years old.
Lucas took a long time to recover, he was underweight and had poor conditioning, but more than that were the mental scars. Crosskennan's founder Lyn spent a long time getting to a point where he could walk without fear or pain.
Lucas was a champion at the sanctuary and later strutted his stuff at local shows, including Balmoral. When he wasn't out showing off what a neglected and forgotten racehorse could do - he was at the sanctuary reminding people what a little bit of time, patience and love can do.
He helped teach children and adults of all ages about horses. He helped nervous riders gain confidence, and those also with mental scars of their own find their own peace and own way in life. He saved many lives over his lifetime at the sanctuary.
Lucas was a true gent. He built some great friendships during his lifetime including best buds Hercules and the late Solomon, McGregor and Jake.
Favourite memory
Lucas was a beautiful gentleman and great with people despite the hardships he faced earlier in life. He loved to touch muzzles with his equine friends.
