About

Mr Amardeep Malhi, a Computer Science teacher at Colton Hills Community School based in Wolverhampton, is stepping out to support the Birch Thompson Memorial Fund Charity that commemorates two of the school’s former teachers who took students on memorable school trips.

For many months, Mr Malhi has prepared for his journey of a lifetime trekking to the Everest Base Camp. He has saved the money and taken time out from school holiday as well as granted unpaid leave to carry out this challenging activity. Mr Malhi is a keen explorer and thrill seeker, having bungee-jumped, sky-dived and travelled all across the globe.

As part of this climb, Mr Malhi is seeking donations to be made to the Birch Thompson Memorial Fund Charity that will be used complete an outdoor play area at Gelliwig, the Residential Centre in Porthmadog, managed by the charity, and named after Graham Birch and John Thompson.

All donations will be gratefully received and will enable the charity to continue to provide accommodation to community groups, asylum seekers, schools such as Colton Hills. We wish Mr Malhi all the best in his conquest.

Retired businessman David Cheadle was inspired by Graham Birch when taken on school trips has himself been trekking, doing a circular trail on Mount Everest and describes it as a life-changing experience. When Gelliwig was opened David took part in a sponsored relay race to Gelliwig and did a five mile stint in the Berwyn Mountain all uphill in rain , wind and darkness !

David wishes Amardeep all the very best both trekking and fund-raising – perhaps they will meet on a Snowdon ascent!

Birch Thompson Memorial Fund

The Birch Thompson Memorial Fund Gelliwig, our residential Centre in Porthmadog , is a tribute to Graham Birch and John Thompson, teachers at Colton Hills School who died prematurely in 1980. The charity, registered in 1981, was formed to honour their contribution to the lives of young people at Colton Hills School in particular and Wolverhampton generally.

Gelliwig, can accommodate thirty people using a mixture of bunk beds and single divans. There are beds for wheelchair users and a hoist and shower chair as an integrated approach to all young people was the initial ethos.

The small, not for profit, local charity is managed by volunteer trustees and has a part-time paid warden living near to Gelliwig. The cost to user groups has always been kept to a minimum and is subsidised by fund-raising of which our Annual event with the Joe Loss Orchestra has been a successful example.
