In November of 2024 we received reports of a horse in distress, tethered on waste ground.
He was placed in a secure area and we arranged for a Vet to check over him.
It turned out he is completely blind in one eye and only partially sighted in the other.
The frog in the centre of each foot was completely missing, rotted out because of the filthy, wet conditions in which he had been forced to stand.
He was also crawling with lice and plagued by a nasty feather mite infestation too.
Abandonment proceedings were followed but no owner came forward.
We therefore collected the newly named ‘Popeye’ and made a trip to Clevedale Equine Practice where the lovely Vet Alistair Love assessed him and scoped for Strangles.
Freedom from a tether was a culture shock for Popeye.
In the first weeks we were unsure of his future as his warning face (not unlike a cobra 😵💫) had intention behind it and on one occasion he bit hard.
We committed to try and slowly work through his concerns and he thankfully responded very well.
As life with humans became easier, he even started coming to come to call in the field. ☺️🐎
He started to adore being scratched by us - and other horses - and once he found trust his personality began to shine.
A few weeks ago a unique opportunity landed in our inbox and after a successful home check and visit to meet Popeye, he made a trip to his new foster home.
It is never certain that two horses will pal up - 2 is a very small herd with no friendship choice, so we always like it to be a good match. Thankfully it was at least 7/10 from the outset. 😀
We love a happy outcome - and this has got to be up there with the best of them 💜🐎💜🐎💜
