Story

Many thanks for visiting my fundraising page for the Humberston Hydrotherepy pool.

Beween the 30th July- 8th August 2025, weather pending, I will be attempting to swim across the English Channel from Dover to France, “No wetsuit required”

The seed was set for this crazy idea many years ago when I had the pleasure of having the Channel swimmer Brenda Fisher as my swim coach when I joined Grimsby Santa Marina Swim Club. Brenda talked about her experience of swimming the channel which inspired me to want to achieve this challenge myself one day.

Moving swiftly on 50 or so years the fishing line was cast out when I received a phone call while out walking around Louth indoor market, from a friend announcing he was going to swimming the English Channel. So of course that set the ball rolling, I couldn’t let a friend have the bragging rights of swimming the channel when it was something I wanted to achieve myself. Hence by the time I emerged from the indoor market the boat was booked for 18 months time with the Channel Swim Association on Pathfinder, swim slot 4 which was one slot behind my friend.

Fast forward 6 months after completing Ironman Roth in Germany, it was time to start taking the training for the channel more seriously. I joined Grimsby and Cleethorpes Water Rats Open Water Swimming Club, plus using the pool at Grimsby and Cleethorpes leisure centres and many other swimming location and facilities such as Grimsby Dock, Lincolnshire, Dover, Lazarote, Croatia Swim Quest, Lake District, and Ellerton lake North Yorkshire during 2024 and 2025 to ramp up the swimming miles.

So far the training miles completed has equated to a staggering 998,625km – 632 miles starting from August 2024 through to this moment in time. This includes many mile in the pool as well as a 1 X 8hr swim, 5 X 6hr swims and 18 swims over 10km – 6miles at the various location above. There will be many more mikes to swim before the big day arrives. Its been a very long journey. Bring it on!!

Hydrotherapy has been proven to be an effective treatment for a range of medical conditions, including chronic pain, injury rehabilitation, and mental health conditions. Unfortunately, access to hydrotherapy pools is often limited due to their high cost. The need for a hydrotherapy pool in our community serves numerous individuals that have exhausted traditional physical therapy methods or can’t access it. Our current efforts are focused on raising funds through charitable donations to keep our hydrotherapy pool operating for the benefit of those who need it most. It has an impact on each individual life and helps with the quality of so many within our community both children and adults. By giving generously toward this worthy cause, you can positively impact countless lives in our community and improve the overall well-being of some of the most vulnerable children in our society. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to our community of users who have a severe physical impairment and/or a medical condition.
