The Christmas Dinner, founded by the poet Lemn Sissay (OBE), encourages communities to work together to provide a Christmas Day experience for young Care Leavers aged 16-25. Christmas 2021 saw the first event take place in central Middlesbrough. We are aiming to support around 50 young Care Leavers from across Teesside. For many Care Leavers, being placed in the Care System, then subsequently leaving a foster or care home and starting all over again at such a young age, can be a daunting and very lonely experience. Seeing people round them getting excited about Christmas and talking about their plans can cause them to feel even more lonely and isolated. Many Care Leavers struggle to equate Christmas with having a good time as it is often a reminder of everything they have NEVER had. They may be feeling unloved and worthless, and it's at times like this that we as a community need to step in and support these young people on their individual journeys to find their places in the world. With the right support, so they feel like they have a family in the community around them. This is more than just about gifts; it's about making these young people feel valued and supported by their local Community. This is the main reason why we support our Care Leavers on Christmas Day and not before so know they are not alone and that their Community is there to support them in any way possible. Thank you.
