About

In September 2022 Friends of Wadebridge Leisure Centre will take over the operation of the local sports and leisure centre from GLL. Following Covid and a long period of uncertainty for the future of the centre we are keen to make the space feel reenergised and ready to welcome existing, returning and brand new users to the centre and to support our community to enjoy the benefits of sports and fitness.

We are a not for profit organisation and will sink or swim dependent on our ability to show real and significant change to the look, feel and offerings at the centre.

We are taking over at a time of a massive energy crisis and cost of living crisis and the small, short term subsidy agreed with the council will mainly be absorbed by rising utilities and other running expenses.

Our longterm aim is ambitious and requires significant research and planning to maximise the impact of capital investment in heating, ventilation and water treatment plant that will ensure the future sustainability of the centre.

In the short term we welcome any donations, no matter how big or small, to help us add some spark back in to the centre so we can attract and retain staff and members from day one.

Updates

In the 22months since the centre moved in to community ownership over £1.8million has been invested in improving the centre and securing it's future through:

- bringing the building fabric and plant up to a good level of repair after years of underinvestment

- investing in plant and innovative approaches that reduce the running costs of the centre specifically utilities costs

- remodelling the centre to allow for new revenue streams to improve the income/cost balance needed to be financially sustainable including a brand new soft play facility and cafe serving delicious, nutritious food for all our centre users.

The money invested has largely come from a range of grant funding providers locally and nationally, but none of this would have been possible without the support of you, our community. Without us being able to show what the centre means to our local population funding organisations would not have been so willing to buy in to our vision for the centre.

There are still many more areas of the centre that could benefit from upgrades and improvements and it is our hope that we will continue to inspire you and funding bodies to support us in our quest.

Thank you for all your ongoing support, we hope you will continue to enjoy the activities we offer at the centre and the many wellbeing benefits that follow.

Thanks to a significant number of donations and successful grant applications so far, we have now secured over £706,000 in funding towards our target. In addition we have submitted grant applications totalling an additional £200,000. If all of these come good then we are only £30,000 from our target to help us unlock the maximum Community Ownership Funding of £935,000 match funding to help us make Wadebridge Sports and Leisure Centre a sustainable facility that the people of Wadebridge, Padstow and surrounding parishes can enjoy for years to come.
