For this year’s appeal, we are pleased that the Martin Ryle Trust has agreed to dig into its reserves to double the donations made by SGR members and supporters (up to a total of £10,000), so that we can have an even bigger impact in 2025.
Here are just a few highlights of our recent work:
• Tackling the drivers of high carbon lifestyles: We have written a new report on the global carbon footprint of football, especially the role of high carbon industry advertising within the sport. This will be published soon!
• Keeping fossil fuels in the ground: The Cumbrian coal mine – which we had been actively campaigning against – has been scrapped. We are continuing to support the campaign against the new Rosebank oil and gas field, and we focused on ‘Defusing carbon bombs’ at our recent online conference.
• Challenging militarism in science and technology: We successfully campaigned for a new UN study on the potential impacts of nuclear war, made a submission to the latest UK Defence Review, and published an article on the use of Western weapons in Gaza.
• Increasing our reach and growing our team: Our website received over 100,000 page-views in the past year, and we now have a permanent Communications Assistant to increase engagement via social media, helping us to reach even bigger audiences.
There is a lot more that we want to do in 2025, including:
• Carry out new research on international military carbon emissions, especially to highlight examples of greenwashing;
• Increase our campaign work challenging military involvement in universities;
• Carry out further research on the carbon footprint of sport, especially the contribution of high carbon advertising;
• Continue to speak out on the urgent threats from the misuse of science and technology. We will campaign for solutions with the greatest potential to support a transition to peaceful, just, and sustainable societies, while rejecting false technofixes. Engagement with policy-makers, campaigners, other scientists and engineers, and the public will be essential elements in this work.
A donation from you now will help us to pursue these and other activities. Thank you.
