Diwali and Tihar are a time of light, happiness, family and togetherness. But this year, for many families in Nepal affected by the devastating floods, there will be little reason to celebrate. Homes and livelihoods have been lost, and many are grieving the loss of those closest to them.
This has touched me deeply. This year, I have chosen not to celebrate Diwali at home with my own family. Instead, I will be in Nepal, trekking alongside and spending time with some of the people whose lives have been changed forever by the floods, including families mourning the loss of loved ones.
Diwali represents light overcoming darkness and hope overcoming despair. This year, I want to honour those values through compassion, solidarity and simply being there.
I am raising funds to support those affected. Every donation, however large or small, can bring a little hope and remind these families that they have not been forgotten.
As you light your diya this Diwali, perhaps light one for Nepal too.
