Red Squirrels are one of our most cherished native species, but are no longer a familiar sight across much of the UK. Once widespread, they are now largely confined to Scotland, northern England and a number of remnant strongholds. In the landscapes where they still survive, including parts of southern Scotland and northern England, their future depends on practical action, local knowledge and sustained conservation support. Scotland holds 80% of the UK's remaining Red Squirrel population, which is why Restoring Upland Nature needs your help to protect them.

Restoring Upland Nature (RUN) is home of the pioneering South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project and is a Conservation Partner of the Red Squirrel Recovery Network. RUN is leading an ambitious UK Government funded-project in partnership with a group of core partners, including Forestry England, to restore Golden Eagles to England. 

RUN is dedicated to restoring nature across Britain’s wild spaces. Working with local communities and deploying tried and tested techniques, RUN works to restore populations of some of our most iconic wild animals. Core to this effort is the reinforcement of wildlife populations allowing them to thrive, and revival of habitats which for centuries have suffered from intensive use, degradation and fragmentation.

Partnership working founded on collaboration, listening, and evidence-based learning are fundamental to our approach. In these times of a nature-climate crisis, we need to strive for landscape resilience supporting rural communities and nature.
