Tribute
This page has been set up in memory of Peter Dawson, who died on Thursday 8th January 2026 after a short illness.
He was born in 1936 in Ambleside and lived there until 1965 when he married and moved to Lancashire, regularly returning to his beloved “home” to visit his parents Muriel and Arthur Dawson on Holbeck Lane and to walk the fells with his family and friends.
He started his working life at Hayes’ Garden Centre in its very early days, moving on to the slate quarries at Skelwith Bridge where he worked until he married.
He had exceptional knowledge and appreciation of the fells, all birds, animals, plants and flowers, often using the Latin names of them too.
This charity, Ambleside Action for a Future, encompasses everything that Peter was passionate about and any donation to help their work would be much appreciated.
Favourite memory
Peter’s whole life revolved around the outdoors and the beauty of nature, particularly Ambleside and the Lake District, and alongside his wife of over 60 years, Margaret, he has passed this on to his three daughters and his five grandchildren.
