Hedgehog Friendly Portland is a registered charity, number 1207682, which works to help hedgehogs survive and thrive on the Island of Portland. We raise awareness of hedgehogs and how we can help them, and we also rescue orphaned, sick and injured hogs and hoglets, treat and rehabilitate them, and release healthy, viable animals back to the wild. We take in about 200 hogs and hoglets a year from Portland, Wyke Regis, Weymouth, Dorchester, and further afield in south and west Dorset.
The rescue is home-based with a small hospital where sick hogs and hoglets are treated and hand fed if necessary, and a cooler shed where they are moved to gain weight until they are big enough for release.
We run stalls at several Portland events each year to share information about hedgehogs as well as raising funds. But we mainly rely on generous donations to support the work of the rescue. We estimate that it costs £5 per week for each hedgehog in the rescue, covering food, cleaning, bedding, medication and vet bills and overheads. Major equipment purchases are funded with fundraising campaigns.
Every donation, no matter how small is greatly appreciated.
