Golden Eagles were once part of the living fabric of our uplands. They belonged to these landscapes, to their stories, their place names, their wildlife and their sense of wildness. Over time, their numbers fell until, in southern Scotland, the population became small, isolated and vulnerable, while in northern England they disappeared from skies where they had once belonged.
The South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project changed that story. Through careful translocation, satellite monitoring, scientific expertise and patient partnership with land managers, conservationists and communities, Golden Eagles are now at their highest level in southern Scotland for more than 300 years. Restoring Upland Nature exists to build on that success, securing the future of these birds in southern Scotland while exploring how this proven approach can support the return of Golden Eagles to suitable upland landscapes in northern England.
But this is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of a much longer responsibility.
