The Black British Ballet project aims to fundamentally change the way that ballet is perceived and operates in Britain. UK ballet has long struggled with issues of diversity and access, especially among historically disadvantaged groups. We want to bring contemporary, exciting ballet experiences to communities who have traditionally viewed it as not ‘for them’.
Based on the PhD studies of Dr Sandie Bourne, the Black British Ballet project by Oxygen Arts includes a website showcase, a children’s book, a Windrush themed ballet show, a feature length documentary and a touring exhibition.
We are a tiny organisation with huge ambitions to open up the world of ballet. We will engage young people and diverse communities across the UK and make a valuable contribution to supporting greater diversity within ballet and the wider dance industry.
