About

The Big Blue Sea Kayak

The plan. An attempt to sea kayak solo and unsupported from Lands End to John O Groats (or around Britain if I am enjoying myself - the circumnavigation). The challenge will be for the Fire Fighters Charity (they provide mental and physical rehabilitation for injured service personnel), and Whale and Dolphin Conservation (the leading global charity dedicated to the conservation and protection of all whales and dolphins) and to help supply fire fighting equipment to the  State Emergency Services of Ukraine by supporting an appeal from Fire Aid.

I have chosen these charities as they link my experience and work as a fire fighter and marine biologist. In a small way I have tried to help both people and the planet we live on. Add to this the Ukraine war in which we can see both the worst and best of peoples actions. It has given me the desire to do what I can for the brave men and women of the Ukraine Emergency Services. So, I will take on a physically and mentally demanding challenge that will involve risk, discomfort, hunger and a few aches and pains. In doing so I hope to highlight the works and demands of the emergency services, encourage anyone struggling to get support and raise some funds. Now the lighter. I am also hoping people will enjoy the wildlife I encounter and marvel at the scenery.

Please take a look at the website Bigbluekayak.com. It will tell you all you need to know. And thank you for whatever donation you can give. If we all can do a little bit of good, just maybe we can make a difference.

Thanks

Colin

Updates

Maythe4thbewithyou was the intended start date. Unfortunately my covid-19 has taken longer than expected to clear (not surprising given 20 years of inhaling toxic smoke putting out fires). Rather than risk not being at 100% I've delayed the trip for a week. This is really frustrating because the weather is ideal at the moment. The highs and the lows.

I once set off to do a kayak expedition in 1989. We may have over packed the kayak. This time I am going to get my health and gear ready. Fingers crossed the weather holds for a little longer, at least till I am underway and in the "zone".

Many thanks for all the donations and goodwill messages.

Hi. I am now officially retired from the Fire Service. Over 22 years completed. It went by in a flash. 4 weeks to go!

Supporting

The Fire Fighters Charity

The Fire Fighters Charity offers specialist, lifelong support for members of the UK fire services community, empowering individuals to achieve mental, physical and social wellbeing throughout their lives.

WHALE AND DOLPHIN CONSERVATION

We still know relatively little about many of these species. Some have only been identified from bones and live in the deepest and most remote places in the ocean. Only by finding out more about their lives can we develop meaningful conservation measures that will protect them and their homes.

Fire Aid

We are a UK-registered charity who brings together our members to provide ethical and sustainable donations of fire and rescue equipment and training to over 50 countries worldwide.

We achieve this by providing a unique database for sharing donated fire and rescue equipment and by encouraging and facilitating members to share expertise, best practice, funding and equipment to form joint projects and partnerships.

£5,687.50 raised by 91 supporters

£4,770.00 donated plus £917.50 in GiftAid
