ACT Colombia has started a new project supporting a traditional community and Mother Nature. We would be enormously grateful for your support.
The Muisca people are indigenous to Bogota which is part of the high Andes region of Colombia. Their culture is based on deep respect for nature, water and the cycles of the sun which are threaded through their expertise in agriculture and plant knowledge. Yet it can be difficult to retain traditional values and connection to the natural world alongside pressures such as urbanisation, modernisation and cultural assimilation. Many families also find themselves disadvantaged and marginalised in the wider social society.
Working through ACT Colombia, a new team of volunteers, including Muisca de Bosa community members themselves, have joined hands to assist the women of Muisca with a very special project. We are helping to restore the community gardens where food, medicinal plants and plants used in traditional rituals are cultivated. Currently, families working in the gardens are among the poorest in the community. During a recent event, they told us that tools and equipment are needed to properly work this precious land which would make the biggest difference to plant health and production. These include tools, topsoil, fencing and hydroponic systems. But restoring the gardens are more than just about plant-yield! This work will have a continuing emphasis on children’s’ learning and cultural empowerment going forward; by continuing to sustain the gardens as spaces of connection with Mother Earth in all her glorious vibrancy, they will strengthen the social fabric and health of the community and become an important platform for community leaders.
Your contributions will make a long term difference that will continue to bring benefits over successive years. ‘What we sow today will flower tomorrow’.
