About

I hope to raise money by challenging myself to raise weights to support the London Colney Hedgehog Rescue LCHR (Charity 1191141) who care for sick and injured hedgehogs. Of the 4 regular hog visitors to our garden, 2 needed in-patient care from LCHR - one with a broken leg and one with lung worm - I am delighted to say that both are now well and have returned to the wild. Happy News. LCHR need our support as 250 - 300 hogs are cared for by Esther and her small band of volunteers each year and all treatments cost money. To pin a broken leg £100, injections for lung worm £30, antibiotics £25 to £50, x-rays £20 and those are cost price through supportive vets.  I decided to challenge myself to fundraise for them and thank Matt, Jack, Rachel and Katie from DVCC gym St Albans for helping me make progress. An average hog is 1kilo and I can now lift 45 of them and push 120 around - I will keep going!  In the UK, the number of these prickly little characters has fallen from 36 million in the 1950s to under 1 million in 2021. This massive decline is down to habitats lost, too many fences and walls (a 13cm hole allows a hog to wander), use of slug pellets, open drains, unsupervised dogs and careless weed strimmers, bonfires and spade and fork injuries. Sick and injured hogs that make it to LCHR have a great chance through the excellent care they will receive. Please would you lend your support to hedgehogs in two ways... by donating to my challenge (thank you!) and by being watchful and caring about where a hog may be hiding in the day or wandering on roads at night - together, we can help them have a future. Thank you.
