Supporting

Sobell House Hospice Charity Ltd - Sobell House Hospice Charity

Caring for our community since 1976, Sobell House Hospice cares for adults in Oxfordshire living with a life-limiting illness and supports their loved ones. Every year, we care for over 4,000 patients and their families, helping our patients to live well each day and die with dignity, surrounded by the people they love.

Making every moment matter, the care that we provide is compassionate, dignified and centred on each person’s needs. Our expert staff take the time to get to know each and every patient, and their family and friends, as we accompany them through what is undoubtedly one of the most difficult and painful experiences they have ever faced. Our focus is on the here and now and making every moment count. By providing our patients with a better quality of life, we hope to give them more time making memories with loved ones, or doing what matters most to them. We help people get married, celebrate important milestones, and maintain their independence.

At the end of life, we support people to live their final days as they choose to, and strive to give our patients a peaceful and dignified end, surrounded by their loved ones.

Arnelly - Train of Thoughts (Dream) - 45

Artwork title: Train of Thoughts (Dream)

Description: Gouache. In this piece of artwork inspired by a Japanese bestselling book titled "We'll Prescribe You A Cat" by Syou Ishida. The postcard depicts a young child who is wearing the uniform of a Japanese kindergarten student with an iconic bright red schoolbag travelling alone in a train in a trusted society. The train symbolizes that life is fast-paced and moving. The colourful squiggles from the child's thoughts represent the child's dreamy imagination in life. Because the child is still very young, the thoughts are fluid and blurry. The child is carrying a carriage holding the cat. As in Ishida's book, the magical cat allows the person who accompanies it experience a positive wonderful impact in life.

Artist Statement: As an Art Scholar from Headington Rye School, I am hoping that my art can bring hope, joy and meaning to the people in my community. My mum is a Pediatrician and she always speaks of the plight of the sick and her difficulty in healing to soul, especially when the body is beyond help. I am thinking that the humility, vulnerability and understanding from a human to another human may offer solace in this aspect. This is the inspiration I have for this piece of art I am submitting.

Chester Dodds, Jonathan - Sleep with One Eye Open - 121

Artwork title: Sleep with One Eye Open

Description: Oil paint, coloured pencil & acrylic medium on Paper

Artist Statement: Jonathan Chester Dodds is a British painter whose work captures the charm and quiet storytelling of everyday life through a whimsical lens. Working primarily in oil, his paintings are intimate, richly coloured, and imbued with a narrative warmth reminiscent of mid-century illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone.

Drawing inspiration from bustling streets, quiet corners, and the characters that inhabit them, Dodds’ work finds beauty in the small moments—a figure lost in thought at a café table, a lamp-lit doorway on a rainy evening, or a musician caught mid-melody. His compositions feel like glimpses into a world that exists somewhere between memory and imagination, where the ordinary is gently elevated into something magical.

A strong sense of place is at the heart of Dodds’ art. Whether depicting townscapes or interiors, his brushwork combines precision with expressive looseness, giving each scene a lived-in, almost dreamlike quality. His figures, often small but distinct, are rendered with an economy of line and detail that conveys both character and movement, suggesting stories just beneath the surface.

Dodds' work has found appreciation among collectors who value art that is both evocative and accessible, striking a delicate balance between nostalgia and fresh artistic vision. His paintings celebrate the everyday with wit and affection, inviting viewers to pause and appreciate the charm of life’s fleeting moments.

Day, John - Elissa - 172

Artwork title: Elissa

Description: Portrait

Artist Statement: I am an Oxford based artist that alternates between figurative and landscape work and oscillate between highly measured, carefully observed works and those that are loser and more expressive. Paintings are based on things that interest me and are either personal relationships or represent interactions with people and places. All art is really autobiography. I am currently working on a series of nocturnal paintings of Oxford, trying to represent the city at night in paint as well as denoting the life and energy of the place. Figurative works are usually from the model during life sessions in Oxford or portraits of people I know. I have donated work to Sobell House before and believe in supporting local charities; probably more so now than ever charities are reliant on the public as benefactors and to donate art seems a pretty great way of helping, albeit in a very small way.

Keskin, John - AWKWARD CONVERSATION - 301

Artwork title: AWKWARD CONVERSATION

Description: Pen and Ink and Watercolour on Arches Watercolour paper

Artist Statement: I've always been happiest with a pen in one hand and a brush in the other, filling blank pages with strange little worlds that amuse me. My work is a mix of pen and ink with watercolour—often messy, always expressive, and hopefully entertaining. I like to capture the absurdity of everyday life, the quiet oddities lurking in the mundane, and the occasional bit of nonsense that sneaks in when I’m not looking. My process is wobbly, spontaneous, and more about instinct than precision. If a drawing makes me chuckle—or at least raise an eyebrow in approval—I call it a success. If it makes someone else do the same, even better.

Pilgrim, Lynn - Garden Flight - 436

Artwork title: Garden Flight

Description: Hand printed paper with hand drawn embellishment.

Swifts are a red listed endangered bird that spend their lives on the wing- sleeping, eating and mating airborne. They only stop once a year to nest and we are privileged that they migrate from Africa to do this. This nest in cavities in roofs, and old buildings, however, so many of these nesting sites are being lost. We need to replace them with Swift nesting boxes or Swift bricks built into houses to give them a chance to prosper. 'Garden Flight' shows the freedom of a swift passing over the garden oblivious to us living our lives below.

Artist Statement: I work in mixed media and my art always appears organically often with very surprising results. I am drawn to shapes, pattern and colour and experiment with different mediums to see what is going to happen.

I am taking part in My lovely postcards because I have lost some close family members to cancer and know that the end of life care Sobell House can offer is so important. I took part in 2023 and found the whole experience a privilege and very moving. I received a message from someone who bought one of my postcards while her husband was dying and it moved me to tears to know that she identified with my art and it gave her a small amount of solace in such a difficult and sad time.

Taylor, Jessica - Composition 1 - 538

Artwork title: Composition 1

Thoughts on artmaking in Art Therapy by Sobell House art therapist: Knowing where to begin when faced with a blank piece of paper is often daunting. I sometimes encourage patients of mine who find themselves facing this challenge to begin with a single mar or gesture without a concern for where it may go or what it may become. This can begin the process of a kind of imaginative unraveling whereby the next mark is suggested by the once preceding it, until a form emerges out of these initial gestures. I enjoy making drawings in this way myself.  Somewhere along the way I find my curiosity about what the marks are suggesting is sparked and something that may surprise me comes into being. There is something inherently reciprocal about this way of making art - a conversation between the unintentional gestures and the forms the eye begins to see and shape in these, and the encounter at the end with something unknown and unintended which has found its way into representation.
