Leaving the Memorial Gardens, York at 9am we will travel by coach to Bishop Auckland to visit the new Spanish Gallery, a display of mainly sixteenth- and seventeenth- century Spanish art in a setting whose style and décor, particularly several hi-tech re-creations, have excited considerable controversy.
In the afternoon we will travel to nearby Raby Castle, a vast forbidding medieval fortress-palace, whose interior contains elegant, beautifully decorated and furnished rooms designed by James Paine, Carr of York and William Burn. There is also a fine collection of notable pictures. We will leave at 5pm for the return to York c. 6 30pm.
